He is great at everything. I read it ages ago, but I can remember it without making any mental effort whatsoever. For example, some of Narcissus and Goldmund's discussions of philosophy and science sound too modern to have taken place during medieval times. It is one of those books that stays with you.
Everyone loves him. Narcissus has dedicated himself to the ascetic and austere life in the monastery with heart and soul and Goldmund first tries to imitate him. Walter Proska is a young Wehrmacht soldier who begins to question the purpose of the war, who the real enemy is and whether his real duty should be to his fatherland or his own conscience. I have never exclusively followed an author except Hesse.
The story seemed to be setting up beautifully for nothing but pure gold early on. With this he opens up into his true self, and wishes to leave the confinements of Mariabronn. I was talking to a student who is reading James Joyce’s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man with me this summer about how Demian reminded me of Portrait, and he suggested I reread Narcissus, especially since he knew I had been reading plague-related novels (Camus’s The Plague, Daniel DeFoe’s A Journal of the Plague Year). Apparently, he finds out later he is an art prodigy too. It is a coming-of-age story, a commentary on existential philosophy and a beautiful description of a life long friendship. He has subjected himself to a strict life and lives completely ascetically. More than bleak considering this is a meditation on the roles of the artist and thinker (and never the twain shall meet mind you) in a modern world. He feels remorse, but wants more, as his virgin heart aches to pursue this love affair. Goldmund can do no wrong. I think it is better than Siddhartha and Steppenwolf and very worth reading. It's more philosophical in nature, more a novel of ideas, more like reading a religious text than anything else, and that is the beauty of it... or at least that is what I have found in it.I see this book as a meditation on the beauty and the power of Art. Comedy based on the radio comedy and the bestselling books and audio-books by Marc-Uwe Kling. Reckless, wild and passionate. He is a cerebral man who values the intellect but his emphasis on the rational also prevents him from having any real friendships or meaningful love in his life.

Hesse was less respected by the literary establishment than his fellow German countryman Thomas Mann, but he was way more of an international sensation, especially in the romantic sixties, when I and many of my friends read him. It stayed in my heart and in my mind. Put the dicktalk aside (which is no small task here) and you still have an enormous vine from which to swing back and forth from pole to pole. Everyone loves him. I have now finished all of his major works and I must say "bravo".
The two meet and become friends early in the cloister. oh yes. However, in the end Goldmund refuses an offer of guild membership, preferring the freedom of the road.
