Review by Edwin Evans-Thirlwell, Contributor Updated on 7 June 2017.

When I first played, I never felt like I could relax into an area to soak up the stories of its emails and audiologs, because I was always expecting yet another Mimic attack. Nor is it adequately explained whether villager Chay (Sarin Preap) and his mute son Sombath (Nget Kakada) have strayed into the area as innocent bystanders or are have some connection to a drug manufacturing operation which seems to be run by the warden. Most disappointing is the nothing role of Chinese Interpol agent Li (Dy Sonita), who’s captured almost as soon as she and bureau chief Wong (Jia Lee) arrive to rescue Xin. Prey is a first-person game in which you play as Morgan Yu, a scientist whose gender you choose, though the choice has little impact on the plot. And then it usually undermines it all with yet another goddamn Mimic. So foam darts are incredibly cheap, but Neuromods are not. Forking out a small fortune for what the warden describes as “the best damn afternoon money can buy” are macho man Mat (Byron Bishop), his mentally unstable nephew “T” (Nophand Boonyai) and their sneering buddy Payuk (Sahajak Boonthankit). I like the visual design of the Typhons, but I also question the wisdom of having the most frequent foe be a small, spider-like enemy that's difficult to see in low light environments. The aliens become more creepy the more, well, unknowably alien they seem. That fits somewhat with Prey's slower pace, and how most Typhon variants are designed to be difficult to take down—with large health bars and powerful or debilitating attacks. He enjoys RPGs and immersive sims, and can often be found reviewing Hitman games. I backtracked to use the recycler and fabricator in Morgan’s office to turn the junk I’d looted into ammo, to retrieve a weapon or piece of information I learned about while exploring somewhere else, or just to soak in the atmosphere of an area I wanted to spend more time in.

I was excited to ask my colleagues how they’d handled the area, but as we talked, I realized we’d all had completely different experiences. One of the cheapest to unlock, Kinetic Blast, is an area of effect blast that does a decent chunk of damage and can propel physics objects away.

It's a cool idea in theory, but in practice it's an enemy built around fairly cheap jump scares—loud, generic horror sound effect and all. In Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, you always know that there's a vent that will take you closer to your mission objective. The weakness of the early combat, for instance, pushed me towards improved sneaking, and my dissatisfaction with the basic guns led me to improving the damage buff of sneak attacks, as well as unlocking some heavy hitting alien powers.I've made my peace with Prey's combat, but that acceptance was hard won. Luckily for you, that space station exists to research and produce Neuromods, designed to make humans faster, stronger, smarter and scientifically magic. Then, you spend some of your four resource pools to craft what you need. One—a pretty lengthy revenge tale—just sort of ends, and in some potentially silly ways. Jimmy Henderson delivers another scrappy yet satisfying low-budget action movie in a country where the genre has been all but nonexistent.Trumpeted as Cambodia’s first million-dollar action movie, “The Prey” can’t match “Jailbreak” for sheer excitement but does suggest that with more original and ambitious material Henderson could become a real force in Asian genre cinema. As with everything, From there, I explored crew quarters in meticulous detail, creeping into each and every room, handling enemies and following an adorable plot thread about a Dungeons and Dragons game. Frequently, Prey's strengths build to create a tense and compelling atmosphere.
